Lansing City Council recognizes Juneteenth celebration, committee outlines week of events

Councilwoman Carter read a resolution on June 8 recognizing the 33rd annual Lansing Juneteenth celebration and thanked the Junth committee for organizing the city’s multi‑day observance.
Angela Matthews, the committee’s communications lead, invited residents to the schedule of events and urged public participation. “Don’t let the name deter you. You are invited to come out and celebrate this with us,” Matthews said, describing family‑oriented programming across the week.
Organizers provided event details: a Negro Leagues tribute and ballgame on June 13 at Benjamin F. Davis Park, an essay and art competition on June 18 at the Michigan Library and Historical Center, a flag‑raising at city hall on June 19 (11:00 a.m.), children’s activities at St. Joe Park that same day, and a Juneteenth Freedom Festival and parade through the Westside neighborhood culminating at St. Joe Park on June 20.
Vendor coordinator Joy Gleason and health‑fair coordinator Alicia Train described partner services and participants: Lansing Community College programs (nursing, dental hygiene, massage therapy), county health services, community mental‑health providers and Oak Street Health. Train said the health fair will run between 11 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. during the festival.
Committee members also highlighted featured performers: local headliner Phil Denny, saxophonist Isaac Norris and Grammy‑nominated trombonist Hank Belo. Rodney Singleton, a new entertainment committee member, previewed the musical lineup and encouraged residents to bring lawn chairs and umbrellas.
The council approved the resolution by voice vote. Council and staff said the city will promote event schedules on the city website and urged residents to check lancingjunthceelebration.org for updates.
