Prospect Heights council takes first reading on 50-year gas franchise with Nyore Gas

At the meeting, city staff presented a first reading of an ordinance that would authorize Northern Illinois Gas Company (Nyore Gas) and its successors to construct, operate and maintain a gas distribution system in Prospect Heights under a proposed 50-year franchise.
Peter told the council the city entered an initial 50-year agreement with Nyore Gas around the time of incorporation. “It was a 50-year agreement. It expires ... June 22nd, I believe ... so that when this passes on the 22nd, it'll be a seamless continuation and this is for another 50 years with Nyore Gas,” Peter said. As a first reading, no action was taken; staff said the second reading and potential adoption are scheduled for the June 22 meeting.
Council members asked no substantive questions during the first reading and were reminded that members of the public may ask questions before the second reading if needed. Because this was a reading only, the council did not vote on the ordinance at the meeting.
