Giddings council certifies May 2 election results and swears in new mayor, two councilmembers

Interim City Manager Heather Garner presented the official vote totals: Linda Pruitt received 245 votes for mayor; Council results included Mark Muniz (235), John Dowell (203), Charlie Brown (128) and Miranda Hilderbrand (63). The council adopted Resolution No. 627‑2026 to canvass the general election returns; the motion carried with ayes recorded by Alan Casey, Jacob Janda and Kevin Rinn.
The council also canvassed the special election on proposed charter amendments. Garner reported that Propositions B through K passed and Proposition A failed (Proposition A would have lowered the minimum age for mayor and council from 21 to 18). Council adopted Resolution No. 628‑2026 canvassing the special election returns; the motion carried with ayes recorded by Casey, Janda and Rinn.
City Secretary Andrea Ray administered the oaths of office to re‑elected Councilmember Mark D. Muniz and newly elected Councilmember John Dowell and to Mayor Linda Pruitt. Outgoing Mayor Joel Lopez presented certificates and transferred the gavel to Mayor Pruitt, who then offered brief remarks as the incoming mayor.
Separately, Councilmember Mark D. Muniz nominated Alan Casey to serve as mayor pro‑tem for the 2026–2027 term; the motion (seconded by Kevin Rinn) passed with aye votes recorded for Casey, Janda, Muniz, Rinn and Dowell. Casey accepted the appointment.
The canvass and oath proceedings concluded without further debate. The council did not take additional action on these items at the meeting.
