The Sparta trails committee has applied for Sussex County trail funding to fund initial work on the Iron Horse Trail, commission members said at the June 11 meeting.
"We did complete the application for the Sussex County funding...they're supposed to come out with a decision on that highly competitive grant in early summer, hopefully," Committee member Christine Dunbar said, adding the request is in the $20,000–$25,000 range and would cover signage and clearing a section from Sunset Inn Road toward Demarest.
The trails committee scheduled a meeting for June 24 at 6:00 p.m. to review the vision for extending the Iron Horse Trail and to discuss next steps, including progress on a previously discussed land swap for the Safe Schools Trail. Members also said the committee nominated a new applicant, Jerry Yonkers, at a recent meeting.
Commissioners agreed to follow the grant decision and to coordinate with master-plan work where trail routing and access points should be integrated.
