Commissioner Robert Otto summarized several issues with artificial turf: higher injury risk on some turf surfaces, the presence of PFAS and heavy metals in crumb rubber infill, and long-term questions about who pays for removal and hazardous-waste treatment when turf reaches end-of-life. Members said the town previously used open-space funds to help finance synthetic fields and noted that changes to state funding policy could affect future projects.
The commission also asked staff to post an upcoming "hour of action" Zoom regarding the New Jersey School of Conservation and to share advocacy materials on the commission's Facebook page. No formal position was taken by the commission during the meeting; members agreed to monitor the bills and consider local implications when policy or funding decisions reach the council.
