Kings County proclaims June 2026 as Elder and Dependent Adult Abuse Awareness Month

Christopher Nars, deputy director of the Health & Social Services adults division, briefed the board on local trends and asked supervisors to adopt the proclamation. Nars said Adult Protective Services investigated 599 cases in 2025 and the local ombudsman reported 79 complaints in long‑term care settings; the District Attorney’s Office received 16 referrals and filed nine related cases. “Knowing the signs of what abuse may look like can help in early intervention and successful outcomes,” Nars said.
Bobby Wartson of the Kings County Commission on Aging described the ombudsman program’s role in investigating complaints, monthly facility visits and resident advocacy. District Attorney Sarah Hacker described four abuse types her office sees — physical, neglect, financial and mental abuse — and recounted recent cases, including two elder homicides handled in the last two years.
Supervisors and members of the public shared examples of scams and family‑member exploitation; staff announced two community pancake‑breakfast outreach events scheduled for June 12 (Armona) and June 17 (Corkran Senior Center) to raise awareness.
The board’s action directs county staff to support outreach efforts and publicizes APS and ombudsman contact lines for reporting concerns.
