Council asks New Albany Company to donate land for Veterans Memorial; motion approved unanimously

City Council voted unanimously on June 18 to request that the New Albany Company dedicate just under 2 acres in the Civic Block to create an extension of Rose Run Park and a veterans memorial behind Village Hall.

"We're asking tonight, formally for that opportunity," Mayor Spalding said as staff presented the preferred site behind Village Hall and explained the design approach developed with MKSK and a veterans focus group. Director Jolly said the site best matched a vision of a reflective, natural setting rather than a standalone monument.

City staff described a multi-year planning process and noted they had also examined five alternate sites. The proposed location would connect the memorial to an extended Rose Run Park linear system and to the civic block amenities. Tom Ruby of the New Albany Company and representatives from MKSK attended and answered council questions.

Councilor moved that the city ask the New Albany Company to dedicate the parcel south of Dublin-Granville Road, including the former mill warehouse parcel, for the memorial and park expansion. The motion was seconded and carried with seven yes votes.

The council also discussed how the dedication meshes with broader Rose Run 2 planning and the Market Street extension; staff said the request would help secure the land needed to realize the veterans memorial's design and to coordinate park and stream enhancements.

What happens next: Council will provide the motion in writing for staff to pass to the New Albany Company; staff and the city's design partners will continue schematic planning for the memorial and Rose Run Park's Phase 2 work.
