Sagadahoc commissioners schedule January workshop for municipal leaders on new tax apportionment option

The Sagadahoc County Board of Commissioners agreed at its Dec. 9 meeting to schedule a workshop in January to discuss recently amended legislation that allows counties to determine whether municipalities may make two tax payments to the county.
Commissioner Steve August said he had asked Administrator Amber Jones to convene municipal leaders to explain the option and hear their perspectives; Jones suggested Jan. 14, the day after the next regular meeting, as a likely date. Commissioners discussed whether to hold the workshop in the afternoon or evening to encourage municipal attendance and noted that towns could submit written comments if they could not attend.
August said Sagadahoc is among the counties considering the policy and referenced a news story about Washington County, which is pursuing a different approach to municipal tax scheduling. Administrator Jones said she would send invitations to municipal leaders, gauge timing preferences and circulate a draft letter to municipalities for Commissioners’ review before the January meeting.
The workshop is intended to allow municipal leaders to provide input before the Commissioners consider any formal policy change.
