The Colonial School District Board of School Directors held its June 8 business meeting with a series of student recognitions that highlighted academic competitions, performing‑arts accomplishments and athletic milestones across the district.
Dr. Christian introduced the recognitions and invited coaches and program leaders to the podium. Steve Hormell, who coaches the district Odyssey of the Mind team, described an especially difficult run to the world finals: the team raised roughly $15,000 for travel, lost a crate of props in transit, then rebuilt their show in 26 hours to perform on a Broadway stage. Hormell said the team earned the Renatra Fuca creativity award and placed third at the World Championship, and urged the board to support coach recruitment and program growth in younger grades. “The growth I’ve seen in all these kids is remarkable,” Hormell said.
The board also recognized five Plymouth‑White Marsh (PW) students who qualified for the DECA International Career Development Conference and multiple tennis players who earned all‑league honors after a league championship — the program’s first since 2008. District staff called forward student representatives to receive certificates and public acknowledgement.
District coaches and staff celebrated the girls flag football program’s first league championship and a varsity season that finished 14–2; a coach credited rapid program growth, volunteer coaches and player leadership for the progress. Coach Perez reviewed the PW softball team’s season, which the transcript records as a program‑record 19 overall wins, a third straight league title and a second appearance in the state tournament. Perez listed seniors and underclass contributors and noted several players plan to continue athletics in college.
The recognitions concluded with thanks to coaches, volunteers and families. The board moved on to routine business after the presentations; no formal board action was required to mark the recognitions.
The board is scheduled to reconvene in August; the meeting adjourned following brief board comments and congratulations to students and staff.
