Mineola trustees approve meter purchase, pool permits and staff pay increase; accept longtime parks employee retirement

MINEOLA — The Mineola Village Board unanimously moved through a slate of routine resolutions at its June 10 public meeting, approving a $94,635 purchase of 165 water meters and 40 wall radios, authorizing pool-related contracts and permits, approving a personnel pay increase and accepting the retirement of a long-serving parks employee.
The board authorized the meter and radio purchase from Rio Supply, Inc., to be paid from the 2026–2027 water fund. Trustees also approved procurement of pool chemicals for the John Estanzo pool and a change order that reduced the plumbing contract for the PAS treatment project at Well No. 1, Phase 2; Benson Contracting Inc. will issue a $34,986.70 credit that lowers the overall contract amount.
Trustees granted an annual permit request from JNS Catering to operate a catering truck along specified village routes on weekdays and approved Boy Scout Troop 45’s request to use the village pool for water-safety training and merit badge work on June 24–25, 2026, from 5 p.m. until closing. Trustee Clark moved the troop-use motion; Trustee Saloski seconded.
The board approved a merit increase of $4 per hour for Gabrielle Akunia in the village clerk’s office, retroactive to June 1, 2026, under the applicable collective bargaining agreement. Trustees also accepted a retirement letter from a parks division employee with 42 years of service and authorized the contractual benefits payout; the employee’s last day is June 20.
"It was a beautiful mass," the mayor said of recent community observances, referring to events tied to Portugal Heritage Month and the 125th anniversary of Corpus Christi Church. Trustees and staff thanked Department of Public Works crews and auxiliary police volunteers for their work on the week’s events and parade.
Trustee Saloski reminded residents that the pool opens June 20 and urged attendees to secure leisure passes; she also reminded residents that the first tax bill is due July 1 and said state law constrains the village’s ability to waive late fees. "That pool is a gem of this village," Saloski said.
All motions on the consent agenda and individual resolutions carried after recorded motions and seconds; where a dissent was voiced, the motion nevertheless carried. The board closed the meeting after a brief schedule of announcements and event reminders.
The board did not take up any contested hearings at the meeting and provided no new ordinances or pending litigation items. Residents were directed to Mineola’s event pages for details on upcoming concerts and FIFA watch parties in village parks.
