Board approves transfer of old OW property to Claflin University in resolution vote

Operations staff briefed the board on construction and site progress at the new Orangeburg Wilkinson High and Howard Elementary schools and explained the district’s rationale for disposing of the old OW site. A trustee noted the district would otherwise face demolition or maintenance costs; during discussion one member estimated cleanup or demolition could cost roughly $2.5 million.
A colleague who spoke in support of the resolution said the university would likely invest in the property and create community benefits, including potential job opportunities. "I think they will do a great job taking care of the property," said a board member in support of the exchange. Board members also said they had received no public objections at that time.
The board moved and seconded the resolution as presented; the vote carried with no recorded opposition. The administration said it will follow resolution terms and the contract process to complete the exchange and seek certificate‑of‑occupancy milestones for the district’s new sites.
