Commissioners declare Alpha Kappa Alpha anniversary day and lung cancer screening awareness month

The Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners on Nov. 5 issued two proclamations recognizing community and public‑health observances. The board declared Dec. 7 as the Gamma Theta Omega chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha’s 85th anniversary day and proclaimed November as Lung Cancer Screening Awareness Month.
Katie, with Hillsborough County Communications and Digital Media, said the Alpha Kappa Alpha chapter was founded in 1940 and “has worked to provide impactful programs to children and young adults in the Tampa Bay community.” On lung cancer screening, she noted that lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among men and women nationally and encouraged early detection and support for research and screening programs.
These proclamations are ceremonial recognitions of community organizations and public‑health priorities; the announcements did not include separate board votes or funding allocations beyond the formal proclamations. The board’s next meeting is scheduled for Dec. 17 at 9 a.m.
