Railroad Foundation donates $10,000 for inclusive equipment at Varney Playground

The Select Board accepted a $10,000 donation from the Railroad Foundation on May 18 to support phase two of Varney Playground, which will add inclusive equipment and accessibility surfacing.
Public Works Director Christine Clancy described the project as a community collaboration to install equipment that allows children of all abilities to play together, including wheelchair-accessible structures and poured-in-place rubber surfacing. Julie Armitage, a co-founder of the Railroad Foundation, said the foundation's work grew out of a family need to find inclusive playgrounds and a fundraising effort held in March that raised the presented contribution. Kim Riley, a local parent and fundraiser organizer, described local fundraising and volunteer efforts that brought schools, businesses and neighbors together.
Clancy said the project was recently approved at Town Meeting, will be completed as part of the broader Varney Playground phase-two plan, and is scheduled for installation likely after Labor Day, with ongoing coordination between DPW and the foundation.
The Board and attendees took a photo with the symbolic check and thanked the donors and volunteers.
