Grand County declares drought emergency to unlock assistance for producers

Grand County commissioners unanimously approved a drought emergency declaration on May 19 after brief presentation from the county’s emergency management director documenting severely reduced snow water equivalents, historic dry March conditions and low reservoir forecasts.
Staff said the U.S. Drought Monitor shows deterioration across the county and that forecasts for the Colorado and Dolores River systems are below 30 percent of average for the season. The declaration was written to be retroactive to April 1 so individual producers who incurred drought‑related costs after that date may be eligible for relief programs. Commissioners discussed coordination with an expected state declaration and noted the county declaration can make some local producers eligible sooner for certain relief programs.
The motion passed unanimously, and staff said they will continue coordination with state and federal partners about timing of any broader declarations and assistance programs.
