The Newington Town Plan and Zoning Commission voted June 10 to approve a special permit allowing Sloppy Waffle LLC to sell alcoholic beverages at its restaurant at 2551 Berlin Turnpike.
Applicant L. Ramos Spalante, accompanied by her daughter Sophia Spalante, told the commission the addition is intended to expand brunch offerings — “we are now … asking that you approve our liquor permit so that we can offer mimosa and … sangria and maybe spike our coffees a little bit,” L. Ramos said — and that they do not intend to convert the restaurant into a bar. Sophia Spalante described the change as an evolution of the business to meet customer demand for brunch service.
Commissioners asked whether the business intended to serve customers at a bar or permit full bar seating; applicants responded the menu will feature specialty mimosas and similar brunch beverages and that service will remain consistent with a restaurant’s operation. A resident (Rose) spoke in favor, praising the owners’ longevity and community presence.
The commission approved the special permit by voice vote during new business. Commissioners noted a clerical correction to the petition number in the record before finalizing the motion.
The approval allows the restaurant to add alcohol sales to its menu; the owners remain responsible for any state liquor-authority licensing and must comply with any conditions or state rules that apply to restaurant permits.
