The Audubon Public School District board of education voted on June 15 to appoint Ian Rutlinger to a vacancy created by a May 13 resignation, the board announced after a public meeting that drew heavy comment on unrelated personnel matters. Rutlinger will serve the remainder of the calendar year and is expected to be sworn in at the July meeting pending completion of paperwork and routine background checks.
Rutlinger, who described himself during a public interview as a healthcare information-technology professional experienced in AI governance, told the board he wants to help strengthen the district for his children and the wider community. Board members who spoke in favor during the motion cited his data and technology background as useful for district work on metrics and ongoing AI policy development.
The board followed the procedure outlined in bylaw 0143 for filling vacancies and conducted two public interviews earlier in the meeting. The other candidate also described local ties and a desire to support students. After returning from a brief executive session for deliberations, the board took a roll-call vote and announced the motion had passed. The administration said the new member will be sworn in in July, and that anyone who wishes to run for the full term may file the required petition with the county office by the posted deadline.
The appointment concludes the board’s public steps to fill the seat for now; the board also scheduled a community meet-and-greet and said it will continue public outreach on several outstanding policy items this summer.
