Sheriff seeks two deputies and expanded jail medical and equipment funding in draft budget

Jail staff said committing to consistent medical screenings for everyone booked into the facility has increased bills and that a contractual nurse (through the medical vendor) would perform evaluations at intake to reduce later emergency transports.
Sheriff and jail leaders also flagged commissary revenue changes tied to recent federal phone-rate rules (expected to reduce commissary income by an estimated $50,000'$60,000) and said that reduces available non-tax funding for vehicle repairs and equipment. The jail reported equipment failures (dishwasher not reaching sanitary temperature and older laundry/kitchen units) and asked for a $25,000 line-item for a replacement dishwasher or an interim appropriation this year.
The sheriff discussed body camera replacement and deployment options for deputies (a multi-year lease or a large up-front purchase were discussed; quotes ranged from roughly $716,000 to $760,000 in the materials). He also reviewed pension contribution guidance and modest overtime increases aligned with prior-year pay changes. No formal staffing approvals were made at the session; the requests remain in the draft budget for further review.
