Several members pushed back sharply. One lawmaker asked, “When exactly did filling a void in World Health leadership become the responsibility of the New Jersey Department of Health?” and cited recent state‑level oversight failures, including a multimillion‑dollar settlement and continuing record disputes related to past outbreaks, as reasons for caution about expanding the department’s international role. Another speaker argued that the state should not divert resources from federal partners or duplicate federal responsibilities.
The bill’s supporters argued that information sharing and technical cooperation can strengthen state preparedness. The clerk reported a recorded vote of 57 yes, 22 no and 0 abstentions; the bill was declared passed.
