SACRAMENTO — The California State Assembly on May 7, 2026, adopted Assembly Concurrent Resolution 210 to establish a sister-state relationship with Gauteng province in South Africa. Assemblymember Jackson, who introduced the measure, said Gauteng is a major economic center and the partnership will deepen exchanges in higher education, technology and green-energy collaboration.
Jackson told the chamber that "Gauteng contributes 35% of South Africa's total GDP," describing the province as a natural peer to California and noting existing academic links, including a memorandum of understanding with Sacramento State (Sac State). Assemblymember Petrie Norris spoke in support, reflecting on her years living in Johannesburg and her personal connection to the province.
Clerk recorded 65 coauthors added on the floor. The Assembly adopted the resolution by voice vote. Members framed the action as strengthening subnational partnerships in trade, education and climate collaboration rather than creating binding international agreements.
