Staff report: finances steady, new K–8 language-arts curriculum rolled out and summer training scheduled

Pittman reported to the Bremen Public Schools board that "May was pretty much business as usual," noting a slight drop in the education fund balance but no concerning trends and no enrollment change to report at this time. He said the district will revisit enrollments at the August meeting as new enrollments come in.

Pittman described facilities work under way: elementary carpet installers are nearly finished with first grade and have started kindergarten, custodial staff plan tile stripping and waxing in high‑traffic areas, and general‑obligation bond funds for a prior project are nearly spent as the district prepares to move to the next project. He said the carpet uses planks so individual pieces can be replaced if stained.

On staffing and curriculum, Pittman said summer hiring and interviews continue to fill open positions. He outlined a K–8 language‑arts curriculum rollout in which a vendor representative met with elementary and middle‑school teacher groups by Zoom. The district scheduled two summer professional‑development sessions (the 17th–18th and the 22nd–23rd) to map materials to state checkpoints and to help teachers integrate the new books and resources.

Pittman also updated the board on summer school and testing: second graders took electronic assessments with results expected within days; staff expressed cautious optimism about student growth but noted testing frequency and retake allowances are set by external rules and not fully within local control.

The board took no separate action on curriculum rollout during the report; later on the agenda the board approved routine consent and several administrative items.
