The Buena Vista Board of Trustees on Jan. 13 approved a first amendment to the ground lease with the Boys & Girls Club of Chaffee County, granting the organization additional time to begin construction on a new facility.
Dustin Nichols, a Boys & Girls Club board member, outlined the project's history and financing, saying the capital campaign has raised about $8.7 million to date. He described a revised scope—reduced from two stories to a single-story design—to manage inflationary cost pressures while retaining a full high-school-size gym, multipurpose space, arts and performance areas, a theater and an indoor climbing feature for both Club members and the community. Nichols said the Club's goal is to "break ground within six months," with an estimated 18-month construction timeline to certificate of occupancy.
Town Administrator Brian Berger told trustees the ground lease executed in January 2023 requires construction to begin within 36 months, and the Club requested a 12-month extension to keep the lease in good standing and preserve critical grant funding. Trustees asked whether state grants administered through the Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) would be affected; administrators confirmed the grants remain secure under the revised timeline.
The Board adopted Resolution No. 07 approving the First Amendment to the ground lease (Mover: Andrew Rice; Seconder: Maggie Huyck). The motion carried unanimously. The board also adopted a minor administrative correction to resolve a misspelling of Jana Shumann's name.
Next steps: the Club intends to finalize construction scheduling and proceed with breaking ground once extended financing and permitting milestones are met.
