William Penn SD outlines outcomes of grant-funded student wellness and mentorship programs

Miss Cox, a district presenter, told the William Penn School District education committee on June 10 that the district27s Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA) "stronger connections" grant enabled partnerships supporting student wellness, mentorship and leadership development.
She described an ODAP (Open Door Abuse Awareness Prevention) partnership led by Coach Valencia Peterson that ran the ICU (Intently Caring and United) program for female scholars at Penwood High School and the Penwood 9th Grade Academy. "The experiences help our scholars build confidence, skills, and both academic and personal success," Miss Cox said.
Coach Valencia Peterson told the committee the ICU program "served 70 girls this year," and that staff collected 66 survey responses from those participants. Miss Cox said the district will provide any additional participation counts in a follow-up board update.
Miss Cox also summarized the Girls on the Run program, which she said involved four elementary schools (Alden, Bell, Callwin and Walnut) and 74 student participants across those schools. The program concluded with a community 5K on May 2 that district staff said celebrated goal setting, perseverance and teamwork.
District presenters framed these programs as efforts to strengthen social-emotional skills and promote college and career readiness. Miss Cox said surveys and research-based measures are being used to evaluate program impact and to inform future use of grant funds.
The presentations were followed by brief board discussion and praise from members, and Miss Cox and program leads offered to provide more detailed participation and survey breakdowns in a written board update.
The committee did not take formal action on these programs during the meeting; staff said they will report final numbers and the completed evaluation to the board in an upcoming update.
