Indianola board hears building progress: abatement starts June 15; open house planned after teacher in-service

Board members and facilities staff updated the Indianola Community School District on progress at the old and new school buildings, abatement and demolition timing, and community engagement plans.
Facilities staff told the board that asbestos abatement at the portion of the old building slated for demolition will begin June 15, with demolition planned at the end of the month. Board members who toured the new building described rooms that are ready, noted that many spaces have furniture already placed, and thanked staff and volunteers who helped move materials from the old building.
Staff clarified concerns raised on social media that special-education classrooms would be on an upper floor; they said architectural plans must meet ADA and emergency-egress standards and that the building’s level naming will change once construction is complete (what is now the second floor will be the building’s main level when finished). Facilities staff suggested scheduling an open house when teachers return for in-service so classrooms and staff will be prepared.
Board members also reported that Whittier playground work was proceeding and that community members who toured the new building expressed satisfaction with progress. Members thanked staff and volunteers for providing medical assistance during a recent athletic event and for their work during the move.
Board action: no formal vote was required on the facilities update; the board accepted the report and directed staff to continue preparations for abatement, demolition and a community open house once dates are finalized.
