Dawes County commissioners approve $200,000 transfer to road fund, surplus equipment sales and utility petitions

The Dawes County Board on Aug. 12 approved Resolution No. 2025-16 to transfer $200,000 from the General Fund to the Road Fund, certified the highway superintendent program, approved multiple surplus disposals and petitions to bury utility lines, and approved a $750 tourism grant for Slim Days.
The Dawes County Board of Commissioners approved a $200,000 transfer from the General Fund to the Road Fund on Aug. 12, voting 3–0 to adopt Resolution No. 2025-16. Commissioner Walter Juhlin introduced the resolution and Commissioner Jake Stewart seconded; Chairman Vic Rivera and both commissioners voted aye.
The board also adopted Resolution No. 2025-15, an annual program certification for the Highway Superintendent, after a report from Highway Superintendent Wade Yada that crews had graded 173.95 miles since the last report and that the crusher had been moved to the Goff pit. Yada said the State pit is being reclaimed and the county will receive a portion of the crushed rock.
Several surplus and disposition motions carried unanimously. The Public Defender’s Office was allowed to dispose of a fatigue mat and to trade in a Kyocera copier; the County Attorney’s Office was authorized to dispose of a Dell monitor. The Sheriff’s Office was authorized to surplus a 2011 Chevrolet with approximately 115,000 miles; the vehicle will be advertised for sealed bids on the Chadron and county websites, with bids opened and awarded at the Sept. 9, 2025 commissioner meeting. The Roads Department was authorized to sell a 2004 Rock and Roll packer, a 2000 GMC 2500 pickup and a 2016 Cornhusker pup trailer via online auction.
Two utility petitions to place lines underground were approved. The board approved a petition by Great Plains Communications to bore telecommunication lines under Long Road and, after a presentation by Brad Johnson, approved a petition by Nebraska Public Power District (NWRPPD) to bury a line in the east ditch of Road No. 50; both motions passed by roll call.
Tourism Director Kerri Rempp told the board the Western Wild Life Art Show failed to meet the Tourism Board’s grant deadline; the board voted not to accept or award that grant. The board did approve a $750 grant for Slim Days following the Tourism Board’s recommendation. The Sheriff’s Distress Warrant report was accepted by motion.
An interlocal veterans-service agreement with Sioux County also passed. Jordan Roberts, Veterans Service Officer, called into the meeting to report that Sioux County will pay Dawes County $10,620 annually for veteran services in Sioux County and will reimburse the cost of grave markers in the Sioux County cemetery; the board voted to approve entering the agreement. Roberts will discuss budget implications during the scheduled budget meeting.
Routine business at the start of the meeting included approval of the agenda (adding Resolution No. 2025-16 on 24 hours’ notice), approval of July 22 minutes and claims. The board entered executive session at 10:10 A.M. to discuss a legal matter and reconvened at 10:15 A.M. with no action taken.
The meeting adjourned at 11:14 A.M.; the next Dawes County Commissioner meeting is scheduled for Aug. 26, 2025, at 9:00 A.M.
