Council took first reading of Ordinance 8-2026 on June 8 to adopt the 2025 Colorado Wildfire Resiliency Code by reference, fulfilling a state requirement that municipalities begin enforcing the code by July 1. The city attorney and staff explained the code was developed by a statewide board following Senate Bill 23166 and that the city must adopt the code to comply with timelines.
Council members asked whether funding accompanies the new requirements to address potential infrastructure fixes that might be required by the code. Staff said they were not aware of statewide funding tied to adoption and agreed to check and report back at the next meeting. "I will check into it and report back," staff said when asked whether funding was attached.
Council passed first reading of the ordinance and scheduled a second reading for June 22. Staff noted that Denver Fire Department or the city building official can propose local amendments if needed once the department becomes more familiar with the new code.
