Roads manager outlines $252,000 preliminary package, cites county matching grants

Bluff — Bluff's roads representative presented a preliminary $252,000 package for maintenance and improvements and said San Juan County matching grants have helped sustain projects.

Michael described the roads proposal as three primary buckets: $72,000 for maintenance (grading, pothole repair, winter clearing), about $133,000 for improvements (gravel and asphalt work on South Sagebrush, West Bluff and chip-seal work), and about $47,000 for salary, engineering services and equipment purchases. He said an $83,000 matching grant from the San Juan County Transportation Board has already been secured for part of the work.

"If we go through the fiscal year, we spent $252,000," Michael said, adding that the roads account would still have an estimated $110,000 reserve after the proposed spending. He recommended applying for additional matching grants for specific chip-seal work and noted options such as crushed asphalt for some streets.

Council members asked about construction materials, drainage fixes (5th Street near the post office) and whether crushed asphalt would meet county standards. The mayor and others thanked Michael for securing matching funds and said the proposals should be included in the amended budget next week.

Next steps: staff will include Michael's preliminary roads package in the amended budget materials to be voted on by the council next week.
