Kim Brown, director of Parks & Recreation special events, and staff provided council with a detailed rundown of the city's summer events program, which city staff have branded "Summer of Celebration." The presentation summarized Juneteenth programming, expanded Music on Main dates, a stadium block party and festival with fireworks, Red, White & Boom activations tied to the 250th, and Duncan Park centennial activities.
Brown said Juneteenth activities will start at Wofford College and include several partners; Music on Main will run for an extra month this year; the stadium block party and festival will have increased vendor and outreach presence with a firework show; and Red, White & Boom will include a 250th pre'show in Morgan Square followed by stadium entertainment and fireworks. Marketing lead Jess said the city will run approximately 10 social posts and partner collateral, including a commercial and posters, and local broadcasters (WSPA) are already focused on the Juneteenth festival.
Brown and staff also previewed a celebration at Duncan Park Stadium that will commemorate 100 years of the venue with history plaques, a replica giveaway and youth playball events coordinated with local partners. Council members thanked staff and asked about partner engagement with little league organizations; staff confirmed partnerships with Nike RBI, Hillbrook and the Youth Sports Bureau.
The presentation was informational; no formal council actions were taken beyond public appreciation and staff direction to continue preparation and outreach.
