Madison County Electoral Board approves primary preparations, moves canvas and sets training dates

Chairman Jim Smith convened the Madison County Electoral Board at 10:17 a.m. on June 3. The board approved the meeting agenda without objection and unanimously approved minutes for April 1, 21, 22 and 26, 2026.

In a report to the board, General Registrar Lauren Eanes said preparations for the Aug. 4 Republican primary are complete and that the Madison ballot has been approved by the Department of Elections. The board also noted there will be no Democratic primary because incumbents Mark Warner and Eugene Vindman are unopposed for their party's nomination.

The board reviewed and adjusted the calendar of critical dates leading to the Aug. 4 primary. Members agreed to move the first canvas meeting from Aug. 5 at 12:00 noon to 10:00 a.m. and set the final canvas meeting for Monday, Aug. 10 at 11:00 a.m.

Pursuant to 2026 legislation that added two Sundays to the early voting calendar, the board agreed the Registrar's Office would be open from 12:00 noon until 5:00 p.m. on those Sundays. The board also approved election-official training sessions proposed by the registrar for Thursday, July 16 at 5:30 p.m. and Tuesday, July 28 at 10:00 a.m.

During old business the board continued a review of the Department of Elections' Duties and Delegations form, covering the first six pages and agreeing to complete the remaining pages at its next meeting. The board also resolved a procedural follow-up from its April 1 meeting: going forward, a public observer who declines to identify themselves may be allowed to speak but their remarks will not be included in the official minutes.

The board agreed to perform the General Registrar's annual performance evaluation at its next meeting on July 1, 2026. The meeting adjourned at 12:11 p.m.
