Board appoints Dr. Ted Knight as Elizabeth School District superintendent and names him acting superintendent through June 30

The Elizabeth School District Board of Education voted unanimously on June 9 to appoint Dr. Ted Knight as the district's next superintendent and to make him acting superintendent immediately through June 30, 2026, when his contract takes effect.

Board members praised Dr. Knight's experience and vision during a short discussion before the roll-call vote. "His leadership, his vision and proven track record give me great confidence," one director said prior to the vote. The motions to appoint and to make him acting superintendent each passed on unanimous roll calls of Directors Fletcher, Hunt, Olsen and Pal.

Dr. Knight thanked the board and said he has been connecting with parents and staff since his arrival, describing a recent town hall and an end-of-year staff barbecue. He emphasized priorities of improving literacy and math, recruiting and retaining high-quality teachers, and being visible in the community. "I look forward to continuing to dig deep into everything that we're doing and make sure that when our staff and students return in August that we've done everything we can this summer to get them ready to go," he said.

The board also noted that Dr. Knight has been working with principals and department directors to refine the 2026-27 budget; he will present a revised adopted budget at the board's June 23 meeting.

The meeting included other routine actions and a public-comment period in which one parent urged redirecting legal spending; the board went on to declare fiscal exigency later in the meeting and asked Dr. Knight to submit RIF recommendations within 30 days.
