Mrs. Sprout presented a proposal to purchase a 10-passenger vehicle for Garfield's work-skills program, explaining the LA Lowell Rodney Johnson Foundation has pledged $50,000 toward the cost. She said the district does not yet own a student-transport van and district staff evaluated vehicle size, driver certification (a chauffeur license required for this vehicle class, not a commercial CDL), insurance and training requirements prior to recommending purchase.
The estimated purchase price including retrofit is roughly $70,000; the presenter and board members noted ongoing annual costs for maintenance, fuel and insurance could be approximately $18,000. Administration plans to use Act 18 discretionary funds to cover one-time retrofit costs and a separate account has been created to hold the donated funds until the board acts. Staff said Act 18 funding for transportation is not guaranteed in future years and that transportation costs may be chargeable to Act 18 when appropriate. The board agreed to place the van purchase on next week's regular meeting agenda for approval.
