Highway crews report chip‑seal progress; police outline training and parks list fall programs

Highway, police and parks leaders briefed the Town Board on operations and upcoming programs during the Aug. 11 meeting of the Town Board of the Town of Newburgh.
Mark A. Hall Jr., Highway Superintendent, told the board crews will finish round two of chip seal the next day, reporting 11 centerline miles and 22 edge lane miles completed or planned for that round. He said highway crews will return to Colden Park to finish prep work for blacktop in September, thanked the police for help removing parked cars ahead of sealing, and summarized recent cleanups: 23 tires picked up, three tons of garbage removed, 45 signs taken off telephone poles and 18 resident concerns addressed (sight issues, water, potholes, trees).
Donald B. Campbell, Chief of Police, reported that National Night Out went smoothly and thanked staff and volunteers. He said the department will hold active‑shooter training next week as this month’s in‑service program; next month’s in‑service will cover CPR, first aid and bloodborne pathogens. Campbell also noted that every officer receives CPR training and carries naloxone and defibrillators. He relayed a County request for one or two officers to participate in the Hudson Valley Arson and Explosive Task Force; the county will cover training and equipment costs but expects participating officers to assist in investigations if available.
Parks and Recreation Commissioner James Presutti said summer camp concludes this week, Hoop Stars basketball camp begins next week, and a five‑week fall running series at Chadwick Lake starts Sept. 2. He noted a senior picnic on Sept. 5 (pre‑registration required), a concert scheduled the following evening featuring Follow Suit, and continuing work on the fall brochure for the Alice Desmond Center.
These departmental reports were presented for board information; no formal policy changes resulted from the presentations at the Aug. 11 meeting.
