Mona council adopts certified tax rate set by state, schedules June 23 public hearing on budget

The Mona City Council on June 9 formally adopted the certified tax rate set by the Utah State Tax Commission and scheduled a public hearing for June 23 to consider amendments to the 2025–26 fiscal year and to approve the final 2026–27 budget.

City staff explained the state’s revenue-driven approach to property taxation and told the council the commission set the city’s certified rate at 0.000356, which the city estimates will generate about $75,510 in property-tax revenue for the coming year. "That rate was set by the state auditor and tax commission; because we did not pursue a local property-tax increase, we adopt the certified rate," Staff member (Speaker 5) told the council.

The council moved and seconded adoption of the certified rate as presented. Members discussed that increases to revenue would come primarily from growth rather than higher rates, and that any future local rate changes would require a separate process. Council also set a public hearing for June 23 to review proposed amendments to the 2025–26 fiscal year and to consider approval of the 2026–27 final budget; staff encouraged departments to bring any proposed budget changes to the finance lead before the hearing.

Next steps: the public hearing on June 23 will allow residents to comment before the council votes on final budget adoption. The council’s adoption on June 9 recorded the intent to follow the state-certified rate for Mona’s 2026–27 budget.
