Resident urges Brookings to release TLT funds to support film festival

Mike Frederick, a Brookings resident, urged the council during public comment on June 8 to allocate more unspent transient lodging tax (TLT) funds to the Brookings film festival.
“Last year they requested 3,000. They only received two. This year they only requested 2,000 because that's what the form said… I would like to see you give them 5,000 like those other events, but at least give them three,” Frederick said, urging the council to place a funding decision on the June 22 agenda so the festival can benefit this season.
Frederick said submissions to the festival have nearly doubled each year since it started and argued that held TLT funds lose purchasing power to inflation, reducing their local economic impact. He noted TAC 2.0 review processes are not yet operational and warned that waiting for the new advisory committee could mean the funding arrives too late to help this season.
Councilors thanked Frederick for his remarks. Council members said they would consider whether to bring an agenda item forward and requested clarity about past award criteria and how larger awards have been decided in other communities. The city manager may direct staff to follow up with Frederick or bring a TLT-request item for the council’s June 22 meeting.
