Board approves 10-cent school lunch increase for 2026–27

The Lead-Deadwood School District 40-1 board voted to raise student lunch prices by $0.10 for the 2026–27 school year after a paid-lunch-equity (PLE) review.
Amanda, the district’s business manager, told the board the district could qualify for an exemption because it closed June 30, 2025 with a positive cash balance, but recommended the modest increase rather than claiming exemption. Under the approved motion, elementary lunch will increase from $3.70 to $3.80 and the high-school lunch price will increase from $3.95 to $4.05. Breakfast will remain at $2.90 and milk at $0.55. Amanda said adult meal prices will be set in August once state formulas are finalized.
The board approved the recommendation by voice vote. Amanda noted that a previous increase had been a $0.25 raise and that the current $0.10 recommendation balances federal PLE considerations and affordability.
The board recorded no roll-call tallies in the transcript; the motion carried by voice vote. Administrators said the price change will be effective for the 2026–27 school year and will be reflected in student billing and posted menus.
