Jefferson board narrows mobile‑device policy, removes opening paragraph in split vote

Several trustees said that language sent a mixed message and preferred a concise prohibition; others indicated the CSBA wording balanced competing concerns. After discussion, a motion to remove the opening paragraph and adopt the stricter option (students shall not use smartphones or other mobile communication devices while at a school site or under the supervision and control of a district employee) carried on roll call. Trustee Jordan voted no; trustees Ali, Polycarpio and Suji Saka voted yes.
The policy includes enumerated exceptions (for instructional purposes with permission, for health and safety, and other limited circumstances) and preserves administrator discretion to grant permission. The board noted the adopted language will require clear communication to parents and staff about enforcement and exceptions.
