Planning commission recommends sign-code rewrite to allow pole signs and technical cleanups

The Los Ranchos Planning and Zoning Commission voted unanimously June 9 to recommend TA 2601 — a package of revisions to sign code section 9.2.2.22 — to the board of trustees, with staff-directed corrections to graphics before board review.
Director Schultz told the commission the board of trustees had previously prohibited pole signs but asked the planning department to revisit that prohibition after staff found there are more than 80 pole signs already in the village. TA 2601 would add a definition for “electronic sign” (the code continues to prohibit new electronic signs), clarify how sign faces are measured, correct several cross-references, and replace unclear language about clear-sight triangles and temporary-sign permits.
Commissioners debated objective limits versus design-based regulation. Several members said the code should rely on measurable constraints — height, square footage and location — rather than trying to codify detailed aesthetic rules, which the village attorney warned can invite litigation. The commission asked staff to correct diagrammatic graphics (clear-sight-triangle depictions) to reflect consistent measurement points and to ensure the packet for the board contains a clean, consolidated redline.
On the record the commission moved, seconded and voted unanimously to recommend TA 2601 to the board of trustees with the listed amendments and the condition that staff provide updated graphics and a clean draft for the board’s consideration.
