Council reviews new addressing policy to standardize street names and unit numbering

Mountlake Terrace staff presented a draft resolution on June 11 to standardize how the city assigns new street names and addresses, aiming to improve consistency for middle-housing scenarios and multi-tenant commercial developments.
Staff explained the policy covers orientation-based changes to street names, rules for suffixes (street, avenue, place, court), and detailed guidance for numbering multiple structures and units on a single parcel. "The policies before you have been reviewed internally by staff and by first responders," staff said, adding that the fire district had no implementation issues.
For ADUs and multiple detached structures staff said the lot retains the base address and detached units receive letter identifiers (Unit A, Unit B) while attached units get numeric unit designations. The city will notify essential services, including the postmaster, when addresses change so postal and emergency services align with new numbers.
Staff recommended placing the resolution on the consent calendar for the next regular meeting after standard packet review. Council asked clarifying questions about numbering conventions and how the post office is informed; staff said the city assigns addresses and sends official notices to essential services.
