Authority authorizes feasibility study for proposed regional Medical Examiner office

The Kent County Building Authority on May 13 authorized architecture and engineering firm Tower Pinkster to perform a feasibility study and building assessment of a Cedar Street facility proposed for a regional Medical Examiner office, Facilities Management Director Tim Bradshaw said.
Bradshaw told the authority that county leadership and Michigan State University representatives toured the Cedar Street site and found it to have "good potential, adequate square footage from an operational standpoint, and ample on-site parking." He said the location could accommodate five exam tables and serve up to eight counties, and that a final recommendation is expected after the study is completed.
Bradshaw compared the Cedar Street site to a previously considered Wyoming location, saying the Wyoming facility was roughly twice as large but that the Cedar Street site meets the county's operational needs and allows room for future expansion. Using an approximate cost per square foot, Bradshaw said construction is anticipated in the $14 million to $17 million range and that the total project budget is $20 million.
Scott Conners moved to authorize Tower Pinkster to conduct the feasibility study; the motion was supported by Colin Schiefler and carried unanimously. No public comment was recorded on the item.
Next steps: the firm will complete the feasibility assessment and return with a final recommendation to the Building Authority.
