Dalton authorizes engineering review of crane parcel, forms committee to evaluate public safety complex sites

The Dalton Select Board on June 22 authorized the town manager to hire Foresight Engineering to assess wetlands and buildability for a Crane-owned parcel on West Husatonic Street as a potential combined police and fire facility site.
Town staff presented three RFP proposals for potential public-safety sites and outlined options for evaluation: return the RFPs to the original Public Safety Facility Advisory Committee, empanel a new review committee, or send materials to the town architect. Staff also estimated a $3,000 cost for a wetlands/buildability map on the Crane parcel, an amount within the town’s engineering budget.
Board members emphasized the need to involve public-safety stakeholders and the water commission during site evaluation. After debate over retaining members of the old advisory committee versus a newly appointed group, the board voted to create a new evaluation committee composed of two former public-safety committee members, one select board member, a water-district representative chosen by the water commissioners, and the police chief (or designated police department representative). The board also asked the town manager to return with candidate names and recommended that whatever site is advanced be reviewed by the town’s architect after Foresight completes its assessment.
The engineering review is intended to clarify wetlands constraints and buildable acreage before further design or acquisition decisions. The board directed staff to return with detailed cost and timeline estimates once Foresight’s report is complete.
