Three rescue workers receive Phoenix Awards; town to replace cardiac monitors

The North Berwick Select Board publicly recognized three rescue responders May 19 after they received the Phoenix Award for resuscitation in a life‑saving call.
Michael Barker told the board that Jake Demakis, Glen Cefalo and Matt Magill responded to a medical call that helped get Greg Athans to the emergency room for further care. Barker said he was “eternally grateful for the response and professionalism” of the three responders and requested a photo for the town website.
Barker also used the occasion to underscore the department’s equipment needs and said the town is replacing cardiac monitors to ensure responders have up-to-date lifesaving technology. Chairperson Michael Johnson Jr. asked what protections exist if a volunteer is injured on duty; both Dwayne Morin and Barker said Worker’s Compensation policies are in place and noted national foundations and union advocacy that offer additional support for volunteers.
The board marked the recognition during EMS Appreciation Week and did not take additional formal action beyond the presentation.
