Board highlights student voice, library tour and workforce planning during Jan. 21 meeting

The Weld County School District No. Re-5J Board of Education opened its Jan. 21 meeting with recognitions for board members during Board Appreciation Month and a presentation highlighting student programs and recent community engagement.
Superintendent Nielsen thanked the board for its leadership and for supporting a district publication that reviews the last five years of district initiatives. Nielsen also highlighted assistant principals as part of leadership development and recapped recent student events: a robotics tournament at Roosevelt that hosted 42 teams, a health sciences competition and a visit by author Pat McVey, whom Nielsen described as nearly 100 years old and interested in student success and attendance interventions.
Board members reported on community and district activities. Several members praised a library tour and a planned new library space adjacent to Millican Intermediate School. Members also described work on a district leadership conference scheduled for Feb. 4, a youth workforce development session (including an "AI in the workplace 2.0" concept), and other opportunities to amplify student voice and leadership.
During the superintendent’s brief report the board heard a succinct message: "student voice matters," a theme members said is increasingly visible in district programming. The meeting proceeded to consent business and the evening’s special items.
