Commissioner Gamble moved to sign the Active Transportation grant agreement for $132,590 (SP016-612-081 / SP016-615-004); another commissioner seconded and the board approved the motion by roll call. Staff said construction for the trail will begin this summer and is expected to wrap up before the school year starts.
On a separate motion, the board approved a local road improvement grant for the Gunflint 92s project by signing a state-funded agreement of roughly $1.5 million. Commissioners discussed holding a local community meeting to present detour and construction details; staff said they expected to schedule the meeting in late June or early July and that construction would likely begin in early August with completion by mid-October.
No votes against or abstentions were recorded for either grant. The approvals authorize county staff to execute the grant agreements and proceed with the procurement and community-engagement steps required by state grant rules. Community meetings and contractor bids will be scheduled as project details and cost estimates are finalized.
