HERTFORD — The Hertford Town Council reviewed the proposed fiscal year 2026–27 budget at its May 11 regular session and called a public hearing for May 26.
Manager Doris Walton presented the proposed budget and Councilman Evan Copeland moved to set the public hearing for May 26; Councilwoman Sara Winslow seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
During the meeting council approved three budget amendments: FY26-24 (transfer $1,946 from Planning to CDBG to cover newspaper advertising that will not be reimbursed by the CDBG grant), FY26-25 (reclassify $25,000 for sheriff’s office camera purchases from police capital outlay to police supplies), and FY26-26 (move $11,164 within the electric fund to cover emergency repairs after a tractor-trailer damaged a three-phase transformer behind Speedway). Each amendment was moved, seconded, and approved 5-0.
Council members praised Manager Walton and Finance Director Ashley Eure for their work on the budget. Public commenters during the meeting included representatives of St. Vincent de Paul, who asked the council to consider including the nonprofit in next fiscal year’s budget donations; they reported providing more than $11,000 in assistance in Perquimans County since October 2025, roughly half for Hertford residents.
The council did not adopt the FY2026–27 budget on May 11; the public hearing on May 26 is the next procedural step.
