Mahwah schools outline five-year strategic plan as referendum projects move into summer work

Superintendent Dr. Duro presented a second five-year strategic plan to the Mahwah Township Public School District board on June 10, saying the plan builds on the district—s previous work and centers two goals: individualized instruction and financing facilities to support capital projects.
The plan is organized around themed frames that district leaders call "Soaring Thunderbirds," "Launching Leaders," "Flight Calls," "Wings of Wellness" and "Future-ready habitats." Dr. Duro said the instructional goal emphasizes differentiated, data-driven instruction across K— and expansion of programs including a new SOAR offering for grades K—, expanded autism/ABA/behavioral supports, and a phased rollout of I-Ready math (K— this year, K— beginning next year).
At the secondary level, the district intends to implement new science and math curricula, redesign sixth-grade ELA, refine tier-three support entry/exit criteria, continue NJSLA tutoring for students below proficiency, and launch an 18—21 transition program noted as a product of referendum planning. Dr. Duro also highlighted career-connected learning partnerships, including an agreement with Lincoln Tech and new AP course offerings planned for 2027—.
On facilities, the superintendent reviewed a multi-year communications effort with more than 20 community events, a website and materials the district used during its referendum campaign. Board member Mr. Gallow said the district remains "on schedule" to offer bonds for sale at the end of June and expects to receive funds in mid-July, after which summer projects will begin.
Board members asked for continued transparency: the district said it will publish a strategic-plan website that tracks annual progress against goals and displays work year-over-year.
The board received the presentation; no formal vote on the plan itself was recorded at the meeting. The next steps noted were project scheduling and posting progress materials to the district—s website.
