Wapello County Board certifies June 2 primary, declares local nominees

The Wapello County Board of Supervisors met June 9 in Ottumwa to canvass the June 2 primary election, read vote totals for federal, state and county races, and formally accepted the results, declaring nominees for several county offices.
WAPELLO COUNTY, Iowa — The Wapello County Board of Supervisors convened at 9:30 a.m. on June 9 and completed the official canvass of the June 2, 2026 primary election, reading vote totals for federal, state and county contests and formally accepting the results.
Vice Chair Carrie Teninty moved to approve the meeting agenda at the start of the session; Supervisor Bryan Ziegler seconded and the board voted unanimously to approve the agenda. The board then proceeded with the canvass, during which county staff read the tallies for each race into the record.
During the canvass the board recorded the following notable results as read into the record: U.S. Senate (Dem. Josh Turek 865 votes; Zach Wahls 454; scattering 3; Rep. Jim Carlin 521; Ashley Hinson 1,375; scattering 2); U.S. Representative District 3 (Dem. Sarah Trone Garriott 1,227; scattering 5; Rep. Zach Nunn 1,824; scattering 18); governor (Dem. Rob Sand 1,294; multiple Republican totals recorded); and several statewide offices including Secretary of State, Auditor of State, Treasurer of State, Secretary of Agriculture and Attorney General, with scattering votes noted where listed.
At the county level the board recorded the results and issued declarations of nomination where applicable. The canvass record shows County Supervisor — Republican: Darren Batterson received 1,259 votes, Carson Smith 881, Bryan Ziegler 928, scattering 12; the record states Darren Batterson and Bryan Ziegler were declared duly nominated for County Supervisor — Republican offices where appropriate. County Supervisor — Democrat: Laurie L. Fountain received 1,058 votes and Dennis Willhoit 880, scattering 13; the board declared Laurie Fountain and Dennis Willhoit duly nominated. County Treasurer — Republican: Valerie McElroy received 1,725 votes and was declared the nominee; County Recorder — Republican: Autum L. Wonderlin received 1,710 votes and was declared the nominee. The canvass also recorded scattering and other candidate totals for the various contests read aloud.
After the vote totals were read, Vice Chair Teninty moved, seconded by Supervisor Ziegler, to accept the results of the June 2 primary as read. The board voted "all ayes," and the motion carried. At 9:38 a.m. Teninty moved, Ziegler seconded to adjourn, and the meeting was adjourned by unanimous vote.
