Fairfax school board honors student leaders, scholarship recipients and names library for founding principal

At the start of its meeting June 11 the Fairfax County School Board recognized student leadership and academic achievement across the division.
The board extended its highest commendation to student representative Faith McCown for her work on student engagement and policy contributions over the 2025–26 school year. The board also approved the Laura Ashley Piper scholarship and the School Board Character Scholarship; recipients spoke briefly and thanked the board for the awards. "It is an honor to receive the scholarship," one recipient said, describing plans to study and play soccer at Swarthmore College.
Later the board unanimously approved naming the South County Middle School library the Marshall Manning Memorial Library in recognition of Manning’s founding leadership and nearly three decades of service to FCPS; family members were invited to join the board for a photo at the dais.
These ceremonial votes were unanimous and noncontroversial. They provided opportunities for student remarks and community recognition before more contested business later in the evening.
