Burbank Parks announces summer events; resident praises pools and staff say new covers will help maintain 81°F target

Herardo Ruiz, recreation leader with the City of Burbank Parks and Recreation Department, presented the department's summer program announcements on June 11, highlighting youth and family events across the city.
Ruiz described an MLB Pitch, Hit & Run event on Saturday, June 20 at George Isaiah Park that is an automatic qualifier for top performers, a free movie-in-the-park screening of "A Goofy Movie" on June 20 at Johnny Carson Park, Go Skate Day on June 20 at Valley Skate Park, holiday swim events at the Verdugo Aquatics Facility, senior day-trip offerings, Starlight Bowl's summer concert season and recurring kitten adoption fairs at the animal shelter. Ruiz encouraged residents to visit city web pages for registration and details.
At public comment, resident Mariana Walton praised the start of the summer swim season and said she had tracked pool temperatures and found McCambridge and Verdugo pools maintained the department's 81°F target. "Our local children began their summer swim lessons...those kids will be learning to swim in warm, welcoming and safe water," Walton said.
A parks staff member, Diego, told the board Verdugo Aquatics staff had purchased pool covers to help maintain water temperature, reduce evaporation and keep conditions consistent: "We're going to be deploying those pool covers on a regular basis...to keep that water temperature at a consistent level throughout the year," he said.
Director Marissa Garcia (spelled in board remarks as Marissa Garcia) added that several power soccer athletes were selected to receive tickets to a FIFA World Cup 2026 match at SoFi Stadium through the Los Angeles World Cup 2026 host committee's community champions legacy initiative, and one registered participant will be awarded three tickets at an upcoming jamboree.
