The Ottawa Visitors Center board heard several updates about community events and operational issues on March 18.
Donna Reynolds reported that Restaurant Week received positive feedback: nearly 500 passport books were distributed and additional passports were delivered to restaurants after supplies ran low. Participating restaurants reported increased customer traffic and record sales days, with Misfits noting one of its busiest Mondays and Pine Hills reporting strong Sunday attendance.
Reynolds introduced plans for the Full Spectrum River Circus at Fox River Park, an educational program focused on river conservation, pollution awareness and environmental stewardship. She also asked board members to provide letters of support for grant submissions tied to projects such as the Ottawa marquee letters.
Under new business, the board discussed volunteer recruitment and staffing for the upcoming Kites & Flights event, citing rising operational costs, bounce house staffing challenges and sponsorship opportunities. The board also addressed continuing parking issues at the Visitors Center caused by unauthorized use during nearby tours and events; options discussed included improved signage, enforcement and towing policies.
Board members acknowledged the announced departure of Bill Zens from the Illinois Valley Area Chamber of Commerce and discussed cross-promotional opportunities for summer events such as the Debate Days parade.
