The Talbot County Council opened a public hearing June 9 on Bill 1626, a proposed amendment to Chapter 190 (zoning, subdivision and land development) that would allow corporate flags carrying a name, logo or trademark to be flown in conjunction with one or more government flags, subject to limits and conditions.
County staff described basic limits in the draft amendment: corporate flags would be limited to 40 square feet in area and would be flown no more than 30 feet high. Staff also noted the planning commission discussed a non‑substantive amendment that would require a corporate flag to not exceed the size of the government flag where specified.
Zach Smith, representing Preston Automotive Group, told the council his company requested the change so dealerships can fly a corporate flag consistent with a practice Preston follows elsewhere. He said the planning commission had unanimously recommended the amendment and urged the council to approve it. "Preston has a tradition and a policy of flying this corporate flag across its family of dealerships," he said.
Council members indicated the item will return for second reading and the amendment discussed at planning commission level will be available if the council moves to adopt after further review.
