Talbot schools win council approval for $400,000 in budget category transfers to close FY26 gap

Talbot County Schools asked the county council on June 9 to approve budget transfers to cover a projected FY26 operational overrun of about $400,000.
A school finance official told the council savings in several categories — lower-than-budgeted tuition payments to Chesby College, reduced kinship-care charges from other districts, transportation savings tied to bus-driver vacancies, and a capital outlay reduction after ESSER funding paid for an activity court at Easton Elementary — could be redirected to cover the shortfall.
The school official said the proposed transfers would leave the school system with roughly a $20,000 surplus for the year. The school board had already approved the transfers.
Councilman moved and the council voted in favor of the transfers by roll call. Council members thanked school staff for bringing the request forward in time to manage fiscal year-end projections.
The transfers will be recorded in the county’s FY26 operating accounts per standard accounting and budget procedures.
